Weather Line Is Being Acquired

  • Weather Line is shutting down on April 1, 2022.

  • No personal data has been sold.

  • All active subscriptions have been extended for free.

Weather Line has been beloved by so many people across its near-decade long life on the App Store. First and foremost, thank you to everyone that has supported the app over the years. We never could have imagined how far it would go. Weather Line has had a fantastic journey as an indie app, and we are grateful to all of you for that.

In recent months, we were approached by a buyer. They saw the uniqueness of Weather Line and the strong foundation we’ve built. While we aren’t able to provide further details on their future plans for the app, we hope you can understand, and will look forward to it.

The acquisition means the app is going away. Today, we removed Weather Line from the App Store. For all existing Weather Line users, free and paid, the app will continue working for 13 months, until April 1, 2022.

As a thank you, we’ve extended all active SuperCharge subscriptions for free until the app shuts down. You do not need to take any actions to redeem this, and there are no circumstances where anyone will be billed again by Weather Line.

For non-paying users – nothing changes. You can continue using those features for free.

Rest assured that no user data, email addresses, payment information, or any other sensitive data was transferred to Weather Line’s new owners. This data has not and will not be sold.

As an Indie Founder without a day job, being able to sell an app provides for my family in a very difficult climate. There’s a poster on my wall that says, “Make something people want.” While this marks the closing of one chapter, I am humbled and honored to have been able to create something people want. Your support and belief over the last nine years has helped me accomplish that, and I’m so incredibly blessed and thankful.

Thank you,

Ryan and Kevin

Weather Line 2: New Features & Changing to Subscription

It’s coming soon! Next month our huge Version 2 update will be released with an all-new design, awesome new features, and a change to subscription pricing.

Subscriptions

You may not know this, but every time you open Weather Line we buy the weather data you see. So Weather Line actually loses money when customers love the app and use it for 6 years – Oops.

Apps with usage-based recurring costs (like weather apps) are exactly the type that should be using subscription models. But costs are not the main reason we are switching to subscription pricing: Features are.

Features

For the last 2 years we’ve been working behind the scenes to make sure that Weather Line 2 deserves subscriptions by overdelivering on new features and setting us up for a faster pace of development. Some of the features include:

  • unparalleled weather data solution

  • all your top feature requests

  • totally rethought navigation

  • tons of customization

  • 2 industry-first features

Pricing

There is a Free plan for those who wish to continue using our core features with limited ads, plus some of the new 2.0 features.

Our Pro plan is called “Supercharge” and includes a 7-day free trial, all the new features, and no Ads. We have monthly, annual, and lifetime purchase options.

We think you’re going to be stunned by the next evolution of Weather Line and can’t wait to show you soon. Thank you for the journey thus far and the new journey to come!

Story

People say I'm great at making charts.

Many are behind a corporate wall, but you can see some examples on my site I am Concise, and featured by Daring Fireball, Techmeme, and MG Siegler. Once, Ellis Hamburger even called me the "chart maestro"!

Weather data is an opportunity to combine this skill and my love for iPhone. There are roughly 40 important variables to show, multiple time slices, always changing data, and only a small screen.

Current weather apps accomplish this with tables and lists. Leaving you to parse, then digest, and then mentally build a forecast in your head. We want to build it for you. To accomplish this we created the "Weather Line". It shows the temperature, condition, and surrounding context. It works perfectly for all time slices - hourly, daily, and even monthly.

Give it a try. Weather Line will instantly earn a place on your home screen.
